Florida Congresswoman Val Demings, a rising democratic star, is likely on Joe Biden’s short list as a choice for vice president. Last month she endorse him for president.

Ever since presumptive democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden announced he would select a woman as his running mate for vice-president I’ve been thinking about Val Demings.

For sometime now we Americans have been witnessing our politics sink into the realm of the prepubescent — into testing but truculent territories of triviality. Yet, Demings is a type of American who encourages seriousness, who portrays maturity. She possesses a leveling personality and who prompts us to think deeply about the dimensions of democratic possibilities and our currently ruptured national civic condition.

Demings is a bijou within the democratic party. Her pragmatism is steadying. Her demeanor may well be an antidote for a nation of bad nerves as we struggle through the COVID-19 pandemic. A depression of the national mood may soon follow. What’s needed is leadership from the White House that shies away from sharp partisanship and the bad habit of drifting into superfluous verbal fisticuffs.

Demings is an African American congresswoman from central Florida, representing its 10th District, which includes Orlando at its center…
